Statement

I am inspired by native and primitive cultures, more specifically the fusion of their tradition versus the modern world. Vast, untouched landscapes that occur in places like the American southwest and also ones that occur in my dreams are beautiful to me, their natural silence is haunting and frightening on a level different than that experienced in the inhabited places I have lived in. I create work that will bring the viewer into this world where things are always a bit odd, where the viewer is not sure of what time or world they are witnessing. My map pieces represent journeys one takes through life, the colors signify emotions and the lines represent different paths one can take. I enjoy working with watercolor because of its fluidity, and the challenge I get trying to control it. I have also been working with more natural materials (I.E. Papyrus, wood, bamboo) because I feel it is important in the ‘native’ or ‘primitive’ nature of my pieces.
